Abstract
Paralytic. shellfish position(PSP) is a potent marine neutotoxin produced mainly by toxic dinoflagellates which was accumulated in shellfish.
The toxicity is 100 times as; strong as that of NaCN and could be fatal to human.
The main component of PSP had long been considered as goniautoxin (GTX) and neosaxitoxin and its purification, separation a n it analysis by HPLC, TLC and electrophoresis has been accomplished.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the distribution of PSP by species of shellfish, collected area and collected month using mouse bioassay.
Three hundred and three samples of 6 Kinds of shellfish for PSP bioassay were collected at Masan, Jinhae, Chungmu, Samcheonpo and Keoje in South Korea during the study period of May to November, 1989.
PSP was only detected in sea mussel at Masan and Chungmu on only May and not detected in the other species, areas and months.
The detection rate at Masan was 2.9% and Chungmu was 1.6% and total rate was 1.0%.
